The BI Inter-County Class 4 qualifying competition and Class 2 Final were held in the University of Limerick Sports Centre on Sunday February 12 - the results can be downloaded using the link below.
Results from Inter-County Class 2 and 4
Class 4.
The 7 teams in Class 4 were divided into two round-robin sections, one with 4 teams and one with 3 teams.
In section 1 in the 1st match Tipperary played Cork with both sides having scored 2 each after the level doubles, however Cork then took both singles and 2nd Mixed to take the tie 6-3.
In the other match in section 1 Galway raced ahead to take a 3-1 lead going into the singles which the teams shared but Galway took 2 of the 3 Mixed to record a 6-3 win similar to the score in the Tipperary Cork match.
In the 2nd round of matches, in their match against Cork, Wexford gave a better account narrowly losing 5-4 having lost the 2nd Men’s Doubles 29-27 in the 3rd set.
In the other match in round 2 Tipperary bounced back from their 6-3 defeat against Cork to record a 7-2 win over Galway with 4 of the matches decided on the third set.
In the final round of matches in the section Cork secured a 7-2 win over Galway to take their place as 1st qualifier.
Tipperary continued their form from the last match to win 6-3 against Wexford and comfortably take the second qualifying position from this section.
In the 2nd round-robin section there were 3 teams vying for the other 2 semi-final slots.
In the first match Waterford narrowly lost 5-4 to Kerry but then went on to get a comprehensive 8-1 victory over Meath in the second match.
The final match between Kerry and Meath was a much closer affair with Kerry coming out the eventual 5-4 winner with 6 out of the 9 matches going to 3 sets.
But Waterford’s 8-1 result was enough to guarantee them the top position in the section and with Kerry will go through to the semi-finals.
The all Munster Semi-finals of Cork v Kerry and Tipperary v Waterford will battle it out in Galway on Saturday March 24th.
Class 2.
Cork and Wexford competed in a closely fought Class 2 final.
The experienced Cork pair of Tom Ahern and Paudie O’Mahony had a real fight on their hands in 1st men’s doubles to overcome Wexford’s Colm Byrne and Ross McNevin 18-21, 25-23, 21-19.
Tom Ahern playing with Caroline Hayes in 1st Mixed and Wexford’s Ross McNevin with Deirdre Kehoe in 2nd Mixed won their respective matches both of which also went to 3 sets.
Deirdre Kehoe also won the 1st women’s doubles playing with Siobhan Parle against Trish Doyle and Tanya Niedzielski.
In the 3rd mixed Chris McMacklin and Laura Lynch from Wexford won their match against Cork’s Paudie O’Mahony and Tanya Niedzielski.
In the 2nd men’s doubles Cork’s Gary O’Sullivan and Conor Hayes overcame Thomas Power and Chris McMacklin.
The two Hayes from Cork Conor and Caroline secured victory for Cork by both winning their singles against Thomas Power and Ciara Dunne. |
